Animals and nature are incredibly important

March 13th, 2012

Animals and nature are incredibly important, it is safe to say that only a monster would disagree here. We need these things to hold our ever more fragile ecosystem together in an increasingly destabilized ecological world. We are concerned about many things disrupting or continuing to disrupt our planet’s health. We march through streets over global warming and we recycle our paper, plastic, and metal. We turn off the lights when we leave a room and make every effort to use public transportation, avoiding toxic emissions. It is clear thought that many of these efforts are simply drops in the bucket and that regulations need to be enacted in order to fortify real results from our collective work. This is true in no single issue more clearly than in medical waste management, an area where we as individuals have precious little control.
It has been shown that when left to their own devices a number of companies would thwart proper medical waste disposal in favor of saving a little bit of money. This may not seem like an environmental concern exactly but it most certainly is. When syringes and blood bags are disposed of improperly it is rarely in a densely populated urban area. There it would become far too easy to catch the scourge who was so inept or so callous as to dump waste freely. Instead, this toxic material is strewn about wooded areas where animals roam freely and can end up on the wrong side of some potentially poisonous unused medicine or bloody gauze. Regulated medical waste is flushed into rivers and oceans where it is unwillingly ingested by fish and other sea life. Toxic material becomes toxic meals for animals and many will not survive the wasteful and heartless attack on their homes. Meanwhile, the business people responsible for these dumps of what is supposed to be regulated medical waste sit on top of piles of money never engaged with the damage they have done.
The answer to these problems is of course regulations along with trained and certified medical waste management services. Together with a concerned citizenry we can make sure that our environment is not attacked by mistreated and mismanaged regulated medical waste. Instead we can maintain our forests and waterways in a manor that allows life to flourish and the planet to combat some of our more egregious ecological errors. It is in a way, our only hope.

Leg vein conditions are quite common, but there are a few determinants that can increase one’s risk of developing varicose or spider veins later on in life. While some of us might enjoy not having to develop varicose veins and spider veins throughout life, some people are more prone to having it. If you are part of the population described in the eight risk factors cited below, it is best do something to prevent it before it is too late. The following factors are conditions that can increase a person’s chances of developing varicose or spider veins so it is useful to know about them in order to prevent yourself from developing vein conditions while you are still young. The risk factors include:
1. How old the person is- This is one of the more obvious risk factors of a person having vein conditions. The older you are, the more prone you will be to having vein problems because as we get older, the valves in our veins weaken and may not work as well, especially if you do not get enough exercise.
2. Lack of exercise- As mentioned above, not getting enough exercise can increase the risk of having vein conditions. Veins weaken because sitting or standing for prolonged hours will force your veins to exert more effort to pump blood to your heart. Additionally, people who sit with their legs bent or crossed increase the risk of getting varicose or spider veins even further.
3. Weight gain- In line with lack of exercise is having excess weight on your body. Being overweight or obese puts extra pressure on your veins and again, makes them work harder. This can especially lead to varicose veins if one is not careful.
4. Changes in the body’s hormones-Changes in body hormones which commonly occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause also puts one at risk for vein conditions (which is also why women are more prone to varicose veins than men.)Artificial hormone adjustment medication such as birth control pills and other medicines that contain estrogen and progesterone also may increase the risk of forming of vein weakening and complications.
5. Becoming Pregnant-Pregnancy usually carries with it the double risk of weight gain and hormonal changes. More specifically during pregnancy, there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The growing uterus also puts pressure (because it is additional weight and blood supply also needs to travel there) on the veins and it is possible to acquire varicose veins while pregnant. However, varicose veins usually improve within 3 months after delivery. Also women who have had babies before should be aware that there is a possibility that more varicose veins and spider veins may appear with each additional pregnancy. Exercising during pregnancy however helps decrease that risk.
6. Extensive exposure to the sun-Spending long hours under the sun may put a person at risk for spider veins on the face, specifically the cheeks or nose.
7. Skin tone- the fairer you skin tone is, the more visible spider veins are and as mentioned above, the risk increases when you spend too much time under the sun.
8. Your family’s medical history. If there is someone in your family with vein conditions, the likelihood that you also might have weak vein valves is high. About half the population of people who have varicose veins in their family have another member who has them as well.
If you already have varicose veins, certain clinics and medical centers have procedures and therapies available that can help minimize vein conditions.

Microscopes

March 12th, 2012

Microscopes are a unique tool that allows people to see the tiniest of objects under a magnifying light. Researchers commonly use microscopes to see organisms that are both helpful and harmful to the human body. The optical microscope was the first of its kind; developed in 1590 in the Netherlands. However, the real credit to the first official microscope goes to Galileo for his development in 1625. With centuries of existence behind them, microscopes are still one of the most used tools in the science world today. Today you can find a modern light microscope in nearly any high school, university, hospital and research facility in the world. People use them to analyze everything from living tissue, to blood to cells. The first documented use of microscopes was between 1660 and 1670. They were used in England and Italy to analyze the extensive structure of the lungs. By 1676, Antoni van Leeuwenhoek used microscopes to discover spermatozoa and red blood cells as well as other microorganisms.
Microscopes went through several growing stages over the next three centuries until 1955 when the electron microscope made its d?but. With this microscope, the user was able to illuminate the slide to get a better view of what he was examining. This made it easier to see and understand the different layers of cells and to watch cell growth. Microscopes have changed the world of education, research and medicine for the better. Without them, we would never be able to see just how amazing each cell in the human body is. If you are looking into microscopes for sale then you should first consider their use. While microscopes typically last for decades with minimal repairs, the parts are often expensive. Additionally, you often have to send a microscope back to the manufacturer for the repairs. Microscopes for sale from a high school or university are likely the best choice because they have been better maintained than most. Additionally, they receive much less use in a classroom setting that those used in a research facility.
Choosing microscopes for sale over purchasing a new one is the best way to get a quality product and save money. You can easily find some of the popular models of microscopes for sale on bidding sites such as eBay.com. Otherwise you can contact the local university or school and ask when they replace equipment and plan to sell the older models. As a general consumer, microscopes are a great way to teach children about cell organisms and gain a better understanding of microorganisms yourself. With the many different types of microscopes available today which include electromagnet, scanning optical and electron microscopes, there is one to fit every need.

One summer day a few years back, my wife Vida and I were in the kitchen when we heard one of those piercing shrieks that send adrenal spikes through a parent’s heart. Our son, Max, who was 8 years old at the time, had picked up a rock and got stung by a scorpion. I knew that our central Texas variety of scorpions were not known to be lethal, but I also knew that Max was allergic to ant bites and I was afraid that the much stronger toxins in the scorpion sting would wreak havoc in his system.
As soon as we discovered the source of the pain, Vida and I had two entirely different reactions. I ran for the telephone to call poison control and she ran into the bathroom and grabbed a Tupperware bin of Bentonite clay mixed with water that she used occasionally as a beauty mask. All the while the death curdling screams of our son shook the chandeliers. By the time I found the number for poison control and was about to dial, a strange thing happened. Silence. I walked out into the living room and my son’s face still oscillating white and red from a lack of oxygen from all the screaming was staring open mouthed at a glob of wet mud caked on the top of his hand. He seemed shocked that the pain was gone.
“What the hell is that?” was my question.
“It’s clay,” Vida told me. “I read that it was good for insect bites.”
So that was my introduction to calcium Bentonite clay. Apparently the clay paste sucked the toxins out of the shallow puncture wounds and eased Max’s pain within a matter of seconds. He was fine by the way and the swelling went down about 30 minutes after we removed the paste.
As it turns out, we live literally 15 minutes away from author, motivational and keynote speaker and founder of The Living Clay Company Perry Aldridge. Her book, Living Clay, is the seminal work on the topic and Perry A herself has access to a calcium Bentonite mine that produces some of the world’s finest calcium Bentonite clay. The source of the following information about the benefits of Bentonite Clay comes from this book.
Bentonite clay sometimes referred to as “Montmorillonite” refers to edible Bentonite Clay that belongs to the smectite family of clays. These clays were formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago.
Many sodium-based clays are marketed as edible Bentonite Clays but require mixing with an acidic beverage to offset the high sodium content prior to consumption. Our bodies cannot tolerate large amounts of sodium so the amount of sodium-based clay that can be consumed in a day is restricted to small amounts. There are no such restrictions for consumption placed on pure Calcium Bentonite Clay.
As Perry A says in her book, Living Clay: “Sodium-based clays are used primarily for industrial purposes, including: drilling mud; cat litter; plaster; matches; cement tiles; grease; house paints; copy paper; dynamite; shoe polish; concrete; crayons and bleaching agents. Calcium-based clays are referred to as “living” clay as they principally consist of minerals that contribute to the production of enzymes in all living organisms.”
Calcium Bentonite clay is the preferred clay to be ingested by humans, animals, and plants and for incorporating into soil, so be careful when purchasing clay for consumption that you check the labels. The best Calcium Bentonite Clay is pure with a very fine mesh.
Humans have been using healing clays externally and internally to cure illness, sustain life and promote general health and well being.
Calcium Bentonite clay is both an “adsorptive” and “absorptive” agent.
The difference between these two words is fundamental to understanding how Bentonite clay minerals function and how healing clay works.
Perry A explains in her book Living Clay: “Adsorption describes the process by which the charged particles of other substances combine with the charged particles on the outer surface of the clay molecule. Bentonite clay molecules carry a negative electrical charge while toxins, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other impurities carry a positive charge. When the clay is taken into the human body, the positively charged toxins are attracted to the negatively charged surfaces of the clay molecule. The clay molecules act like a magnet, attracting and holding the toxins and impurities to its surface, and removing them when the clay is removed or expelled. That is why it is important to drink plenty of water after ingesting living clay, to help expel the now toxic clay.
Absorption is a slower and more complex process. Acting like a sponge, the Bentonite clay molecule draws other substances into its internal structure. Absorbent clays have a charge on their inner layers. This means that charged ions sit between the layers of the clay molecule surrounded by water molecules. The clay expands as foreign substances are absorbed and fill the spaces between the clay molecule’s stacked layers. Absorbent clay will absorb positively charged toxins and impurities and ignore negatively charged nutrients. Calcium Bentonite clay is by far the most effective clay, with the strongest drawing power.”
As it turns out, Bentonite Clay has many more uses than merely as a paste for scorpion and insect stings. I travel overseas to Southeast Asia every year. I never travel without my clay and I no longer suffer from traveller’s diarrhea or dysentery or any of the other myriad diseases that I used to get perennially when travelling. A couple of ounces mixed with water before bedtime followed by a glass of water and this stuff just does the trick for me.
Most people snigger when I tell them I eat dirt and they have no idea I even brush my teeth with it. But you know what? That’s ok. Our family budget for medical expenses has nothing but zeros in it.

Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still

March 9th, 2012

Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.
Chinese Proverb
We all expect immediate results. That is just part of the age we live in. Communication is fast. Food is immediately available. Ideas are at our finger tips. New drugs are always getting approved. Whatever we need can be taken care of with an email, a doctor visit or a drive through the check out lane at McDonald’s, or just waiting for tomorrow’s new advancement.
The same is true when it comes to our bodies. There is always the possibility of liposuction. There are the extreme make-over people who can turn us into magazine attractive as if over night. There is the possibility that an electric device can cause the equivalent of a thousand abdominal contractions just by plugging it in. And, maybe tomorrow, there just may be a way of altering the fat gene.
Moreover, for those who have had good experiences with athletics in high school, there is the memory of the physical transformation which came by the end of a summer of serious weight-lifting. In light of all this, how can anyone dare to insist that fitness will take at least six months–maybe longer– to just get off the ground?
The truth is that unless we are sixteen we are no longer of high school age. Too, unless we are financially well-off, we probably cannot afford an extreme makeover. That is typically not covered by insurance. Nor could we take off sixty days to go through all of the procedures. Also, as of the present date, there is not an effective fat burner which will shed twenty pounds by the next morning. Even if there were, there is not another which would keep the weight from returning by the end of the month. And, as of yet, there is not a fat gene-altering drug. Nor is there the hope that it will be affordable if, or when, it gets approved.
Thus, the supposed easy answers will not work. They do not even exist. All there really is for any of us is time and good old fashioned hard work. That means daily effort over at least six months without any deviations. In other words, what is required is six months of daily exercise, adequate supplementation and a commitment to a low fat low sugar, preferably gluten-free diet.
Those are the factors needed to make gradual changes. And, it is these gradual changes that we should really care about. Why? Because they have the strong likelihood of actually lasting. Much faster dramatic changes (in under a month, for instance) are simply too hard on the whole system and characteristically backfire with a vengeance (yo-yo phenomenon.) It is as if a part of us does not want to be any different than we are. Even if we insist that we want to be entirely different, that we do not like what we see in the mirror, this other part of us is comfortable, complacent, adequately functioning, and adamant that everybody else should like us just the way we are. That is us at an unconscious level.
At a more conscious level today, we are enslaved to new time tables. As stated before, these are the product of the age we live in. They are referred to as instant gratifications–means whereby we really can get what we want very quickly. Their prevalence influences our senses of how long we give something before we say that it is not working.
Thirty years ago, it never was that way. There was no internet; there were far fewer fast food places; letters and phone calls were the best way to stay in touch; medicine was only dimly aware of radical physique and figure altering procedures; new drugs were far less prevalent. Back then we knew we had to simply allow for some time before physical changes would happen. Everyone knew that. But today, it is different.
This is the reason that many of us fear committing ourselves to fitness. Today, we believe that it will simply take too long–a reality that should not be. On this, we are sure that everyone would agree. That means us, our families, our friends and even the person on the street. We all know this. Therefore, we avoid getting into anything that takes more than a short period–something which causes us to do what we fear the most– simply quitting, probably for the third or worse time.
What should we do in light of all of this? We should face our fear. That is the only answer. Saying that it does not exist or will not exist is a waste of energy. Hoping that it will not ever be there is dreaming. It will be; and it will be largely because of the age we live in. Refusing to recognize this is the same as living in denial–something our present age has deemed not only absurd, but potentially harmful.
Therefore, what we must do is simply say I am afraid of things taking too long and therefore I will refuse to even try at anything which might make some significant changes over time. The effect of such an assertion usually is one of laughter. How could we ever be so unrealistic? But that is how we think; and that is why the internal rhetoric just may be enough to make us simply bite the bullet and stay with a fitness routine for at least six months, if not six years.
The proverb above supports all that: we should never fear going slowly, only standing still. How timely, even if dating from the sixth century BC. How much this says about us as human beings. We have always been afraid of gradual change. It is just that today this is even more so because things are so much better!
Fear not gradual change; fear only standing still. So says the ancient proverb. Yet, perhaps, the saying is not all that helpful. Therefore a better better aphorism might be Fear whatever you like; just refuse to let it hold you back.

Indulging in rich foods

February 26th, 2012

For millions of people, going on holiday often means indulging in rich foods, lounging on the beach, and spending numerous hours sipping fattening drinks and sampling finger foods high in calories. Many people return from vacations feeling glum as they rejoin their daily lives and continue to indulge in overeating and unhealthy lifestyles. A weight loss retreat and fitness vacation can provide the perfect alternative to the food indulgent vacation.
Retreats and vacations which are centered on a healthy lifestyle theme are not lacking in luxury options and people who participate in these retreats do not feel cheated of any indulgence. Instead of indulging in familiar things such as food and lounging, vacationers joining fitness holiday destinations have posh spa accommodations and services. Gourmet healthy cooking classes, relaxing yoga instruction, and professional fitness training make a fitness holiday an ideal getaway for the person ready to stop the routine of bad habits.
Days can be scheduled to include dining on delectable cuisine which is healthy to eat and provides a satisfying meal. In addition to this, guests can learn to cook these gourmet meals themselves so they can continue to eat delicious and healthy foods once they return home. This will provide a motivation and stimulation to continue to follow through on weight loss goals once vacationers return back to their daily lives.
A fitness holiday does not mean the holiday will be lacking in posh comforts or sophisticated entertainment. Dancing classes, hiking, swimming, sailing, tennis, and golf are common activity options offered at a weight loss retreat. Vacationers will be able to choose from these activities or decide to spend an afternoon with a personal trainer learning how to shape and tone specific parts of the body which need extra attention to reach a desired physical form.
As vacationers enjoy the pampering and healthy lifestyle instruction they receive from a fitness holiday, they can also meet with professional trainers to establish a plan to continue on with their new and improved lifestyle once they return home. Many people already well established into a healthy life enjoy vacationing at a weight loss retreat because it allows them an opportunity to pursue activities which they enjoy and to meet others who are like-minded people that share common fitness goals and beliefs.
Stress also causes many people to turn to sweet or starchy comfort foods, which can cause weight gain over time. It is extremely difficult to avoid these foods when you are trying to find motivation all on your own and using sheer willpower to fight your cravings. With a change of environment at a health farm, avoiding these foods you crave but know you should avoid becomes much easier. Many people also find that losing weight itself causes extra stress, because they find that they still crave their favorite foods and feel hungry. Losing weight doesn’t have to be stressful. When you are surrounded by beautiful accommodations, with plenty of relaxing and rejuvenating activities, you can lose weight in a week without missing the foods that you usually crave.

Taking biotin for hair growth.

February 22nd, 2012

A weight loss retreat is one of the best ways to lose weight in a week. For the duration of your stay, you will be able to focus primarily on your weight loss efforts, without worrying about all the distractions that you have at home. If you have been unable to shed unwanted pounds at home, a health farm stay may be exactly what you need to get started on your weight loss journey, or to shed the last few stubborn unwanted pounds, and finally reach your goal weight.
One of the primary reasons that dieters find themselves unable to lose weight is that they feel too stressed to truly focus on their weight loss efforts, and even too busy to exercise. Stress and lack of sleep actually cause hormones to be released in the body which make it harder to lose weight, especially if a person is very close to their goal weight. Studies have shown that the hormones released from stress primarily cause fat deposits to build up around a person’s midsection, which can cause health problems, more so than extra fat deposits stored in other areas of the body.
These luxury health farm accommodations offer spa treatments, a customized diet plan, cooking classes, fitness trainers, yoga, and hypnosis. These practices combined make it possible to lose weight in a week while you relax, away from the distractions and stress of everyday life. You will find motivation to stick to the program that you were never able to find when you were trying to lose weight on your own. When you return home, you will feel refreshed with some great tips to continue your weight loss if you desire, or to maintain the weight loss that you achieved at your weight loss retreat.
A vacation is normally a chance to get away from it all, see a new place, do fun activities, and most importantly, relax. At a luxurious health farm, you can do all those things and also change your life and your body for the better. Schedule some time away today and come enjoy a beautiful retreat while you lose weight quickly.
Biotin is naturally found in the foods you eat and is one of the building blocks for hair cells. It helps hair to grow, as well as encourage fast, healthy growth of skin and nails. If you are struggling with your locks, biotin for hair growth can help you to grow stronger, longer and healthier hair.
Vitamin B
Biotin is part of the Vitamin B family. Also referred to as Vitamin H or Vitamin B7, it’s found in high concentrations in foods such as eggs and liver. However, you would have to eat nothing but eggs and liver to consume enough biotin to see a noticeable difference in your hair.
Biotin Deficiency
While you would need to consume copious amounts to see a difference in your hair and nail growth, a deficiency shows clearly through dermatitis and hair loss. People who are dealing with balding or just struggling with hair that is brittle can benefit greatly from adding a biotin supplement to their daily diet. Other symptoms associated with a biotin deficiency include depression, hallucinations, numbness in the extremities, lethargy and fatigue.
Less Breakage
One of the reasons biotin for hair growth is such an excellent option is that it actually makes the hair stronger. It does this by making the new hair growth more elastic, thereby creating hair that is less prone to breaking.
Thicker Hair
Most people are interested in having hair that is also luxurious and thick. Another feature of biotin for hair growth is that it will actually make the hair cuticle thicker. This will create hair that is visibly thicker and healthier.
Safe for Daily Use
Unlike some vitamins that should be taken in moderation, this waters-soluble supplement is completely safe to take in larger doses. The body does not store Vitamin B. It uses what it can and flushes the rest. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about making yourself sick because you consumed too much biotin for hair growth. There are no negative side effects reported in association with biotin, but there are many reports of people whose hair is now longer and healthier than every before.
Other Benefits
There are other advantages to taking biotin for hair growth. It is known to aid cell growth, produce fatty acids and help metabolize fat and amino acids. This makes it a great supplement for helping to get blood sugar levels under control. Biotin for hair growth will also help keep the sweat glands, bone marrow and nerve tissue working effectively.
Completely Natural
In addition to being found in cauliflower, eggs and liver, biotin is also naturally produced by the human body. Created in the intestine, biotin is not only completely natural; it’s a normal and necessary for the human body to function.
Biotin for hair growth is effective and safe. However, it’s difficult to consume the levels you need for hair growth from food alone. For that reason, a supplement is strongly recommended.
The supplements are safe to take with no concerns about side effects or overdosing. If you are ready to have thicker, healthier, faster growing hair then get more information about biotin for hair growth.

Cheap nursing scrubs are a way of life

February 19th, 2012

Cheap nursing scrubs are a way of life for many folks in the medical field. It is not that they would not like to look nice but simply that the nature of their jobs suggests any attempts to look good while saving the world one ailment at a time simply does not make much sense. The feeling is often that this is a messy job but someone has to do it so why bother with the bells and whistles of forward looking fashion. As a result many medical professionals from nurses, aides up through surgeons and counselors have just gone for whatever scrubs they can find at a good deal with a reasonable level of comfort.
In recent years however this cavalier attitude towards fashion in the medical workplace is on the wain. This is because more and more name brands are getting into the world of discount nursing scrubs. That’s right not only are they offering their designer patterns and brand-names in the world of scrubs, they are doing so at a far more affordable rate than their regular clothes. Brand name hospital scrubs is a growing subsection of the fashion business. The fact is that the medical care sector is constantly adding jobs and becoming an undeniable demographic with a lot of purchasing power.
To keep up brand-names as diverse as Landau, Baby Phat, and Dickies have gotten into the nursing uniform scrubs business. These brands have raised the bar on what is an acceptable pattern for a medical professional to wear to work. As a result the formerly drab world of hospitals and medical clinics have some friendly color schemes and a more inviting feel overall.
Perhaps these changes in work wear were inevitable. In many ways the days of a suit and tie being the uniform of the white color work force has been swept up by the advancements of media and electronics businesses fueled by the work of people more interested in fashion choices than looking the part. This rabid individualism in the work place was bound to make inroads into many other industries. It would appear that the medical and healthcare fields were not immune to the charms of looking and feeling good while you work.
Good for them. There is no reason that the world should be thrilled by their own fashion sense while the hardworking folks administering our medicine and monitoring our health progress should not be afforded the same opportunity to like the way they look. If fashion belongs in any workplace at all it should feel right at home in the hospital.

The human body contains a system for urinary function that is nothing short of amazing. It is solely responsible for three very important tasks: maintaining a normal volume of water within the body; flushing the body of waste; and preserving the delicate balance between acids and base minerals within the body to avoid an unnatural buildup of either one. The bladder is the chief outlet for removing waste in the form of urine and when something like incontinence, overactive bladder disorder or an enlarged prostate gland upsets the balance, all control can suddenly thrown out of whack, leading to embarrassing accidents.
Aging is the Leading Cause
Incontinence is often caused through simple aging because the bladder, like all muscles in the body, will weaken over time. As it weakens, it can lead to problems like urine leaking at odd times, urinary incontinence, and changes in urinary frequency. It can be embarrassing to deal with but it is imminently treatable in most cases. There are three basic types of urinary incontinence: overactive bladder, stress and overflow.
In the first type, when the bladder is considered to be overactive, sufferers will often experience accidents of wetting if they cannot reach a bathroom in time, lose sleep during the night trying to keep their bladders under control, and feel the urge to go at least every two hours.
In stress incontinence, leakage may occur when you laugh, cough or sneeze, and simple movements like light exercise or even getting out of a chair can cause an accident.
Overflow incontinence also has frequent urges occurring but when you do get to go, hardly anything comes out. If you experience any of these symptoms, see a doctor immediately for diagnosis and treatment.
Why it Happens
Losing control of your bladder can occur for a host of reasons, including aging. If any part of the urinary system, from the kidneys to the bladder fails or is blocked in some fashion, urinary incontinence will happen. Women tend to suffer more than men, because their internal organs are different to allow for childbirth. Pregnancy, and an imbalance in hormone levels can cause the pelvic floor muscles to weaken and shift, moving the bladder, urethra and uterus to shift out of place. Surgical scars in that area can also cause blockage to occur near the neck of the bladder, creating that urge to go, without actually releasing the full volume.
In men, the leading cause of urinary incontinence is an enlarged prostate gland. The position of the gland, and its nearness to the male urinary tract, can cause pressure on the neck of the bladder, creating an urge, and helping to block off the ability to fully release. The pressure is sending incorrect signals to the brain, triggering the release of urine prematurely, and interfering with the sense of completion. Having a longer urethra helps men to avoid the constant leaks that women suffer, though they still have the same amount of urging.
Treatment
Medications like Detrol and Vesicare can help patients manage their urge to go, by relaxing the smooth muscles of the bladder and reducing the number of accidents occurring. The medicines must be taken daily, and it will reach full potency within the body in about two to six weeks. There are also exercises that can be done to tighten and strengthen bladder and pelvic muscles, and these are often prescribed for patients who are suffering from a weak bladder due to aging.
Surgery is an option to correct bladder problems or to correct things that cause it, like an enlarged prostate or a prolapsed uterus. There are other therapies that go beyond these, and concentrate on regaining control of the muscles surrounding the bladder, like biofeedback, electrical stimulation or even Botox injections. The exact method of treatment for any case of incontinence or overactive bladder disorder is at the discretion of your doctor, and it may take a combination of therapies to fully regain control, and your peace of mind.

Nothing is as relaxing as a sauna

February 15th, 2012

Nothing is as relaxing as a sauna. Fitness trainers sometimes recommend them to clients to help them relax the muscles after exertion and help improve circulation. Many cultures throughout the world have a tradition of saunas or steam baths and recognize the benefits that they can offer those that take part.
Some of those purported benefits include improved circulation, relaxing of the body and mind and helping the body to sweat out toxins. Many claim that saunas can improve metabolism and help the body’s ability to heal and regenerate. There are reports that steam baths can help with minor illnesses such as colds and even help those that suffer from asthma breathe more easily.
Before you choose to try a sauna, be aware that they are not recommended for those with certain health conditions. Those include those with unstable heart conditions but those who have stable coronary disease might be able to take part. As with any physical activity it is wise to ask the advice of a physician before starting.
The obvious risk to a sauna is becoming overheated. This could lead to heat stroke or severe dehydration. Start by spending short amounts of time in the sauna and be sure to leave if you start feeling faint or dizzy or too hot. It should be a relaxing experience, not painful or uncomfortable.
There are many places to experience a sauna, fitness clubs and spas often include them in their facilities. Be sure to choose a facility that is clean and has trained attendants on duty. Find out if your local laws require that saunas be licensed and if so, ask to see the certification. Do not go to a sauna if it seems dirty or neglected.
One of the major benefits of a sauna is the feeling of relaxation and rejuvenation that you’ll experience. This can help you stay motivated to meet your fitness goals and help ease any minor aches and pains that come after vigorous exercise. Taking time to do things that make you feel good about yourself will only help you as you work towards a more healthy lifestyle.
If you enjoy steam baths, there is no reason not to indulge as long as you follow safety precautions and do not have medical conditions that contraindicate taking a sauna. Fitness is about more than exercise, relaxation and rejuvenation play key roles in your journey towards health and happiness.

More reason to adopt a healthy living lifestyle. The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) believes that living a healthier lifestyle and eating better could prevent as many as 2.8 million cancer cases each year.
Among the worlds most daunting health challenges, doctors are worried by the increasing numbers of cancer cases across the globe – up by 20% in under ten years – about 12 million brand new cancer diagnosis each year.
The report was released just a few weeks before a UN General Assembly was set to convene a high level meeting on non-communicable disease. This is the second time such a gathering was conducted on a matter of global health. The initial meeting was for the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Non communicable disease (NCDs) are health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and respiratory diseases that take the lives of 36 million people per annum according to the WHO. By 2030, the numbers that will die from NCDs could be as high as 52 million each year.
Health experts tell us that deaths from NCD’s could be stopped by not drinking alcohol to excess, eating a healthier, more balanced diet, not smoking and being more active on a regular basis.
But for people to take heed, often governments need to step in, taxing bad for you foods and habits, offering sensible regulations and curbing advertising claims.
Trouble is, this brings elected officials into direct conflict with the tobacco, food and alcohol industries who likely have contributed generously to their election campaigns. It’s important to understand the conflict between public health needs and those of industry, and the role this plays in getting governments to act.
The experts believe that people just don’t realize the risk of too much alcohol and carrying all those extra pounds in terms of cancer. What’s worse, ads and pricing discourage most people from taking up the healthier habits they might know to be good for them.
Interesting that NCD’s, thought to be a problem of the developed world, actually disproportionately occur in poorer countries. More than 80% of deaths due to NCD’s are from those who live in the low to middle-income nations of the world.
From the 12 million cancers diagnosed each year, 7 million happen in developing countries. This number is also expected to rise dramatically in the years to come. Unless something is done soon cancer care instead of natural disasters or famines will be the focus of charity appeals.
Progress is being made. Many countries are offering low cost cancer screenings and diabetes education, anti-smoking campaigns, promoting sports to encourage fitness or offering clean burning stoves.
The real problem isn’t finding solutions so much as it is implementing the things we already know. While tobacco can certainly take some measure of blame for the sky high disease rates, so too can food makers who advertise… who use popular cartoon characters to appeal to children in both developed and developing countries. With obesity in kids going up faster now than in adults, this needs to stop.
A healthy living lifestyle clearly has incredible benefits to body and mind. Getting the word out about just how beneficial this can be is more important now than ever before.

Exercise will make your muscles tired

February 12th, 2012

So many of us want to eat better and exercise more but don’t know where to start; here is a sample day to give you some ideas on how to make small, simple better choices that add up to a healthier, happier you. Remember, there is no reason to make a huge overhaul of your routines all at once, the best way to make lasting change is to incorporate new habits one at a time.
Try to wake up at the same time every morning, sleeping in on the weekends can feel great but it leads to trouble when you have a hard time falling asleep at a decent time for your Monday morning wake up. Having a regular wake up time makes it easier to consistently fall asleep when you want to at night and will ultimately lead to having more energy through the day and less reliance on pick me ups like sugary coffee drinks and candy/sweets to get through slumps.
This sample day includes breakfast, of course, there is a reason “it’s the most important meal of the day” is a clich?. If you think you can’t stomach eating that early or don’t have the time, start small with yogurt, fresh fruit or a smoothie. Start your day with a balanced meal filled with lean protein and complex carbohydrates and you’ll find that you have the willpower and stamina to make optimal choices all day long.
If you have time to exercise after breakfast, great, but if not there are still ways to move a little more during the day. Can you walk to work? If not, how far away can you park? If you can, take the stairs instead of the elevator. People who work at a desk all day long should take frequent breaks to stretch and move their legs, not only to get a small bit of exercise but to keep your circulation moving.
Bring your own snacks and lunch to the office to avoid the vending machine and restaurant trap. This will not only help you save time and money, but will be more nutritious and delicious, too. A great benefit to brown bagging it is having the extra time that you won’t spend waiting in restaurants or the drive through line to take a refreshing walk during your lunch hour. Not only will the exercise feel great but getting natural light is vital to a feeling of well being but remembers to wear sunscreen!
For those who want to work out, plan on doing it no sooner than three hours before you want to get to bed. Exercise will make your muscles tired but also get you revved up so it’s hard to fall asleep. If you can’t work out any earlier during the day, try to fit it in before dinner or right after so that your sleep is not disrupted.
Getting food on the table for dinner after a long day can be a challenge, so look for meals that you can prep ahead of time and have ready in minutes. Salads are usually easy to throw together and with the addition of lean protein will be a filling, healthy meal. This sample day doesn’t include drastic changes but small habits that add up better health and more energy
